It turns out that Chicago has A LOT of ice cream shops. You could spend each of July’s 22 remaining days trying out somewhere new. And honestly, I might.

I even found some vegan options, so there’s really no excuse to sit out of the month’s revelry.

This charming spot at 3739 W. Fullerton Ave. offers a variety of unique frozen treats. All of the ice cream at 

 is handcrafted, but it doesn’t stop there. From paletas and magonadas to smoothies and freshly squeezed juices, you’re sure to find something you like.

🍧 This summer, their five new flavors are: Piña Colada, Coco en Agua, Ferrero, Café de Olla, Pie de Limón, and Strawberry Cheesecake.

 at 8238 S. Racine in 2016 in honor of her grandparents, who ran a food and game room in the neighborhood throughout the 1980s.

Some of the shop’s most popular treats include: ice cream (duh), Italian ice, candies, and fresh chocolates. There’s also a second location in Brainerd at 1308 W. 95th St.

 at 11033 S. Langley Ave. has brought the city homemade speciality flavors. Seriously, think of any flavor, and they’ve probably already turned it into an ice cream. From Rum Raisin to Sweet Potato Pie to Orange Dream Crush, all of the shop’s flavors share one key ingredient: happiness.

🍌Check out this summer’s special flavor, Original Banana Pudding. They say it “tastes better than the real thing!”

If you and milk don’t really get along, don’t worry! I’ve still found a way for you to celebrate National Ice Cream Month. Well, actually, it’s the owner of 

 at 608 W. 31st St. who deserves the credit.

She learned she’d developed an intolerance to milk while working in her family’s 50-year-old ice cream shop and wasn’t ready to give up her favorite dessert. Thus, Runaway Cow was born. All of the ice cream is made from an oat milk base, which gives it a creamy and rich flavor.

🍦Try a speciality sundae like the Fluffernutter, which is vanilla ice cream topped with marshmallow, peanut butter, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry on top.

 in Ravenswood, I check to see if the giant pink inflatable bear is out on the roof. It turns out I’m not the only one.

“Teachers are always telling me that they’ve got all these kids coming into class and all they want to do is talk about the bear on my roof,” said owner Ted Pirpiris.

Well, I have some intel. They put the bear up on the roof when the wind speed is lower than 15 miles per hour.

And no, the crew of neighborhood teens who work there aren’t climbing onto the roof under the cover of night. Pirpiris confirmed they just flip a few switches in the back, and the bear inflates on its own.

Pirpiris opened the ice cream shop in 2022 in the strip mall his family has owned since 1968. He takes pride in the fact that thousands of kids will remember the shop as their childhood ice cream spot.

The store regularly partners with local elementary schools and sponsors youth sports leagues. Two years ago, Pirpiris even invited a group of about 40 preschoolers to come behind the counter and scoop their own ice cream.

“Seeing all the kids come in is always the best feeling,” Pirpiris said. “It was so funny watching them all pulling on and hanging off the soft serve handles trying to make their own cones.”

Every Teddy's treat comes with the shop's signature Teddy Graham on top. But don't sleep on the soft-serve: It's made with 10% butterfat instead of the 6% industry standard, and Pirpiris swears you can taste the difference.

The fun doesn’t stop in Ravenswood. This year, Teddy’s opened a second location in Lincolnwood at 3910 W. Touhy Ave.

“I love when we get the Greek music jamming at night and see people out on the patio dancing and just loving the vibe,” Pirpiris said. “It’s just a fun, family-friendly place to be.”

When a small corner store has a butcher on-site, you know they mean business. Little Munchkins at 2022 W. 51st St. is run by a family of four who take pride in providing fresh, high-quality meat and produce. They have everything else you need to throw a party, too, from paper plates to side dishes made from family recipes.

Everything You Need To Grill By The Lake

While everyone waits for the corn on the cob to finish grilling, here’s a bite-sized piece of Chicago history you can bring to the cookout. (As if bringing your grill isn’t enough!)

Until the 1970s, Back of the Yards was known as the 

. Due to the area’s high concentration of railroads, it was home to the former Union Stockyard and a large sprawl of packing plants and related businesses.

Miles of stockyards held millions of live animals waiting to be butchered. At their largest, the stockyards stretched across an area the size of about 1.5 Grant Parks, according to the 

. The industry employed thousands of workers, who established some of the city’s first labor unions to fight for better wages and working conditions.

After processing its 1 billionth animal, the Union Stockyard closed in 1971. Automation and other changes made Chicago’s meatpacking district less relevant.

While the stockyards are long gone, one neighborhood business is still helping Chicagoans stock their summer grills.

A Small Bite of Chicago’s Meat-Packing History

Seeing Chicago’s vibrant queer community come out in full force as the whole city launches into summertime always reminds me why I love living here.

I’m especially looking forward to the Pride Parade on Sunday. This year is particularly special because it falls on my birthday! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than putting some glitter on my face and soaking up thousands of people’s sheer joy.

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite LGBTQ+ owned businesses that keep Chicago bright and colorful all year long. For even more recommendations, check out City Cast Chicago contributor Anna DeShawn’s 

Iced coffee, bagels, and tarot, oh my! This community-centered coffee shop has quickly become a staple in the neighborhood. I swear, every time I walk by, there’s a line out the door. It offers a wide range of pastries, including vegan and gluten-free options, and they create a new zodiac-themed drink every month. The cafe hosts a slew of community events, from crafting meetups to comedy shows to tarot readings.

Open since 1980, it’s one of the city’s oldest LGBTQ+ bookstores and a place that’s easy to get lost in. Its multiple rooms of winding shelves are home to an unparalleled collection of LGBTQ+ literature, plenty of fiction and poetry, and an extensive section on sale. This 

 shows how the bookstore has evolved in the last 45 years.

This vintage shop has been “making Bridgeport weirder since 2022,” with its wide selection of clothing, art, and everything in between. The owners remake, remix, and repair antiques to give new life to timeless treasures. New items drop in-store every week, and you can also buy 

On a quest to increase the dwindling number of lesbian bars throughout the country, one queer couple opened a neighborhood cocktail lounge “for every friend of Dorothy.” The subterranean, 70s-inspired speakeasy is known for its arts-focused events, including silent reading nights, open mics, movie nights, and more. It’s a little tricky to find the first time, but don’t let that deter you. Look for the unmarked red door on Chicago Avenue just west of the “2500” painted on the building.

LGBTQ+ Owned Businesses in Chicago

 became the local chain of thrift stores we know today, it took shape as a series of garage sales created in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Howard Brown Health founded the organization because so many people were dying and leaving behind entire homes full of belongings. Many families refused to take their things due to the stigma surrounding the disease, so the LGBTQ+ clinic stepped in.

Brown Elephant moved into its first storefront in 1982, and is now located in Northalsted at 812 W. Belmont Ave. and Andersonville at 5404 N. Clark St.

“Our name comes from the Brown in Howard Brown Health, and at the time, AIDS was known as the elephant in the room, so that’s why we’re Brown Elephant,” said Northalsted store manager Matt Talaga-Roman.

Ever since then, Brown Elephant has sold donated furniture, clothing, and household decor to raise money for Howard Brown Health, which serves more than 40,000 people each year.

“There have been times throughout Howard Brown Health’s history when funding from the Brown Elephant was the reason the organization survived,” Talaga-Roman said.

In the past fiscal year, Brown Elephant has provided more than $100,000 in vouchers for clinic patients and young people experiencing homelessness who visit Broadway Youth Center. The vouchers are exchanged for items at the store.

“It’s our way of giving back directly to our local community,” Talaga-Roman said.

Plus, as a shopper, there’s a lot to love. Brown Elephant accepts and sorts more than one million pounds of donations, making it the perfect place to find an emergency dress or a housewarming gift.

New items are added to the stores every day. Both locations run a “Monday Mayhem” sale every week, when all clothing is 50% off.

All this to say, you can feel good when you pick up that new-to-you crystal dish you don’t really need.
