| What Chicago's Talking About |
| | | Trump Denies Disaster Relief…Again | The Trump administration has denied Gov. JB Pritzker’s disaster relief request for the third time since last year. This request comes after the August storms that brought tornadoes and nearly 100 mph winds across eight counties, Cook included. A letter said aid was “not warranted” despite every member of Illinois’ congressional delegation, Democrats and Republicans, had signed in support. FEMA approved Indiana’s request for that same storm. [Capitol News Illinois] | | Pilsen Calls For Better Air | Pilsen residents are pushing the state to require more air quality testing before Sims Metal recycling company gets a new operating permit. Residents say the facility still emits elevated arsenic, chromium, and manganese. Meanwhile, Sims says federal officials found no health risk. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency plans to hold a public hearing before the permit's approval. [ 🔒Tribune] | | Silverio Villegas González’s Family Files Federal Claim | The family of Silverio Villegas González filed a claim against ICE, DHS, and the FBI over his killing by an ICE agent in Franklin Park last September. DHS claimed he drove at agents, severely injuring one, although body cam footage caught the agent calling his injuries “nothing major." No charges have been made, and the family must wait six months before they can sue. [WTTW] | | Time to Vote For County Judges. Plus, Chicago Losing Maternity Wards | On today’s podcast, we discuss Chicago losing its fourth maternity ward this month alone. Plus, we break down Injustice Watch’s Cook County judicial elections voter guide. [City Cast Chicago 🎧] | | Must-Read: How Our Independent Grocery Stores Serve Us | Chicago still has plenty of independent groceries where the owner knows you and what you’ve likely come in for. Here are six of them, including Makola African Supermarket, where you’ll find everything from African yams, stockfish, and plantains. [Chicago Reader] | |
